The LGBTQ Center of Durham supports LGBTQ+ people through services, programming, resources, and support networks that center their wellbeing and allows them to thrive.

General Description:

Located in downtown Durham, North Carolina, the Center has a staff of ten full-time, a nine-member Board of Directors and an annual operating budget of approximately $1,300,000.

The LGBTQ Center of Durham Operations Manager will have experience in customer service, working with people of all ages, racial justice training and awareness, and project implementation including:

  • A proven track record of success working with LGBTQ+ people of all ages that fosters an environment of success;
  •  by responding appropriately to all concerns and concerning behavior;
  • •by being a thought-partner in the development and implementation of programs and operations at the LGBTQ Center;
  • by sharing and affirming all LGBTQ+ lived experiences; and
  • by responding to the needs of our clients and visitors in a warm and welcoming manner to ensure all folks feel welcome.
  • A proven track record of success recording and managing intake for visitors to the center;
  • by developing lasting systems that will ensure proper assessment of visitor needs;
  • by providing productive guidance to the Center staff to help inform practice;
  • by advocating for folks from our most vulnerable populations and being a true advocate bystander.

Our ideal candidate would bring a background in operations management, customer service, and logistics with a track record of development and promotion of diversity, multiculturalism, social identity development, social justice through diverse programming, educational interactions, training, community development and educational dialogues

Work experience and Education Requirements:

  • At least 5 years nonprofit, higher education, or public service experience.
  • At least 2 years program and/or volunteer management experience.
  • At least 2 years customer service experience.
  • Undergraduate degree not required; candidates with relevant experience in place of a BA encouraged to apply.

Ideal Experience:

  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ people and a commitment to prioritizing and advocating for the needs of folks with disabilities and people of color.
  • Manage program design and goals in accordance with the organizational mission.
  • Contract and budget management.
  • Represent the Center at community activities to enhance the community profile
  • Community outreach and involvement.
  • Safety and Risk Management experience and/or training.
  • Recruit, screen, train, supervise, and lead volunteers in collaboration with staff.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends.
  • Understanding of issues affecting the Durham LGBTQ+ community.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Executive Director/Deputy Director, the Operations Manager has the responsibility and is accountable for managing all customer service interactions and, independently problem solves operational and logistical issues.

Be the face: They will strategically improve customer service interactions for QTPOC, people of all ages, and communicate clearly the LGBTQ Center of Durham’s mission and purpose.

Lead Assessment: They will be responsible for managing and supporting The Center's mission and goal by doing periodic and on-going assessment of programs to ensure overall success.

Social Media: They will, in collaboration with the Executive Director and Deputy Director, coordinate and develop all social media efforts. A diverse approach to best satisfy the needs of our constituents and the Center.

Operations: In collaboration with the Executive Director and Deputy Director, they will focus on “keeping the Center running” by setting systems in place to maintain the operational function of the Center. This includes tracking inventory and stock, reporting and improving faulty systems, and managing Center volunteers along with setting the volunteer schedule.

Work Environment

The operations manager is expected to work evenings, weekends, and weekdays as is the rest of the staff. Ability to prioritize multiple projects and manage frequent interruptions is essential to succeeding in this environment. Ability to lift 25 pounds on occasion.

Salary Range and Benefits

Depending on education and experience the salary range for this position is $56,000 to $59,000.
